"A Starry, Starry Night" to benefit Special Surfers

Tourist & Town - July 14, 2022, Volume 64, Issue 9

Above Board - All Hands on Deck has selected Special Surfers as the beneficiary of its 2022 fundraiser, "A Starry, Starry Night," which will be held on Thursday, August 18 at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre in Arundel.

Above Board is a volunteer committee designed to support initiatives affecting the greater York County region. This group has raised over $143,000 to benefit various local initiatives and is pleased to raise funds for yet another worthy recipient.

The common thread for Above Board’s fundraising initiatives is to help their community become more inclusive. Nanci Boutet founded Special Surfers in 2003 to share the empowering experience of surfing with children and young adults with special needs. When a child enters the water, supported by attentive staff and safety equipment, that child is like everyone else learning a new ability, and their world gets a little bigger.

Special Surfers hosts three events each summer on Kennebunk’s Gooch’s Beach and there is no cost to participate. Above Board aims to raise $30,000 to purchase surfboards, SUPs, wetsuits, fins and stabilizing chairs so those with special needs are able to catch their first wave.

Don't miss this night filled with live music and dancing, specialty cocktails, craft beer and regional wine, and delicious cuisine provided by chef Justin Walker of Walkers Maine.

Please put Thursday, August 18, on your calendar for this important fundraisier.

Stay tuned for a full-length story in an upcoming issue of Tourist & Town.
